Our goal is to provide a welcoming atmosphere for teachers to hone their skills, ask questions, and meet other teachers. Zoom Workshop with composer David Gordon Duke

Contemporary music is, by its very nature, contemporary! But do all composers make a clean break with the past in their search for the new forms of expression?
Join composer and musicologist David Gordon Duke in a Zoom Workshop exploration of the deep historical roots that often inform music written by our creative and talented Canadian composers.
Duke will illustrate his talk with examples drawn from music for keyboard, violin, and voice, composed by such important figures in our teaching repertoire as Violet Archer, Jean Coulthard, Alexina Louie, and Stephen Chatman—and perhaps a piece or two of his own.
David Gordon Duke was born in Vancouver and has degrees in musicology from the University of British Columbia, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Victoria. He studied composition privately with Jean Coulthard, and, at the Banff Centre, Violet Archer.

He has taught academic music subjects at a number of Vancouver post-secondary institutions, and is a past Head of the School of Music at Vancouver Community College and Dean of the Faculty of Language, Literature, and Performing Arts at Douglas College. He has also written extensively about Canadian music and composers and has contributed essays and music criticism to The Vancouver Sun, Early Music America, and Classical Voice North America. With William Bruneau he is co-author of Jean Coulthard: A Life in Music, published by Ronsdale Press.

Duke is perhaps best known for his educational music. His work has been published by Waterloo Music, Frederick Harris Music, and the Canadian National Conservatory of Music. He has also composed concert music for solo instruments, voices, chamber ensembles, and orchestra. He is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre.
